Your pet may be referred to a neurologist when he or she is suspected of having a condition caused by an abnormality of the central or peripheral nervous system.

The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord while the peripheral nervous system includes the peripheral nerves after they have left the brain and spinal cord; the muscles; and the junction between the nerves and muscles. Both areas of the nervous system can be affected by many types of structural and microscopic conditions, and neurologists are trained to identify and treat these conditions. Some of the neurologic diseases treated at Hope Veterinary Specialists include:

  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Seizure disorders
  • Tumors
  • Infectious disease
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Congenital malformations
  • Imbalances in metabolic and endocrine processes

When you schedule an appointment for your pet with the Neurology Service at Hope VS, your pet will undergo a complete neurologic examination and you will be asked specific questions about your pet's history. A treatment plan, preceded by any necessary advanced diagnostic testing, including radiographs, blood work, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or cerebrospinal fluid analysis, will then be recommended and discussed at length. All necessary testing can be performed at or accessed directly through Hope VS.

Many neurologic problems present as emergencies, and Hope VS can provide the 24-hour care your pet may need, through its Emergency, Critical Care, and Neurology Services. Regular appointments are available during the week, but our emergency service is staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

I can't say enough about the care my dog, Sweet Pea, has received at Hope. All of the staff are so welcoming. We were treated with kindness and caring throughout our visits. Dr. Hadley Bagshaw and Dr. Christine Mullin are experts in their fields who thoroughly explained my dog's condition and test results. I am so glad to have found Hope, and confident in the doctors' ability to care for Sweet Pea. Thank you!!
