Dr. Dennis Burkett is a veterinary cardiologist and emergency and critical care specialist. He also is the founder of the Animal Critical Care and Specialty Group, now known as Hope Veterinary Specialists. He received board certification from the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 1993 and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the subspecialty of cardiology in 2007. He has extensive knowledge of cardiopulmonary emergencies with special interest in cardiology, interventional cardiology, emergency medicine and surgery, and critical care medicine.
Dr. Burkett graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. He obtained an MS (1980) and PhD (1986) in physiology and biophysics from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed a residency in internal medicine (with a concentration in emergency and critical care medicine) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. He completed a residency in cardiology at both Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey and the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2005.
Dr. Burkett is a native of Philadelphia. He lives in Bucks county with his wife and 2 dogs, a chihuahua and a golden retriever rescue with a congenital heart condition – imagine that! He has 3 grown children and is especially fond of his 5 grandchildren, 1 girl and 4 boys. He enjoys pleasure reading (non-technical) and outdoor activities such as biking, skiing, boating, and hiking.
Dr. Burkett is a past president of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society and a past president of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He is a well-known lecturer and scientific reviewer for many professional publications including the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
