Sandra Perkowski, VMD, PhD, DACVAA
Dr. Sandra Z. Perkowski VMD, PhD is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and is certified in veterinary medical acupuncture. She has a special interest in anesthesia for the critical care patient and pain management for both companion animals and the equine patient. After receiving her PhD studying the role of prostaglandins and other arachidonic acid metabolites in the development of inflammatory lung injury, she pursued further veterinary training, including both internship and residency, at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, and served for several years as Chief of the Anesthesia Service in the Section of Surgery and Anesthesia at the Matthew J Ryan Veterinary Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Perkowski has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, and has served on the review boards of six veterinary journals. Dr. Perkowski’s research has earned her a number of awards including a National Institute of Health-NHLBI Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award, which includes a 5-year grant of over $650,000. She has served as head of both the Examination Committee and Residency Committee for the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and is currently liaison between that College and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. As a lecturer, Dr. Perkowski has conducted numerous presentations in England, Canada, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Brazil, as well as the United States. Dr. Perkowski currently heads the anesthesia service at Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern, PA.
